Chelsea can count themselves very unlucky not to have taken all three points away from their trip to Vila Park on Saturday night. The late clash on Saturday was a thriller, with the Blues coming back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.
But they could have won it right at the death and will feel they should have.
Villa went two-up, scoring the opener inside four minutes when Marc Cucurella could only turn John McGinn’s scuffed shot into his own net. Despite Chelsea having a host of possession and Nicolas Jackson have a goal disallowed for offside and a header off the post, Villa went 2-0 up through Morgan Rogers.
Chelsea were far better in the second half and Noni Madueke halved the deficit before Conor Gallagher curled a delightful effort into the top corner of the net to level the scores with ten minutes to go.
Injury-time brought the big controversy. Axel Disasi headed home what he thought was the winner, but referee Craig Pawson was told to go over to the monitor by VAR for a push by Benoit Badiashile in the build-up. the goal was overturned and Chelsea were not happy afterwards.
Assistant manager Jesus Perez had to go and push Blues players away from the referee at the final whistle. Gallagher told TNT Sports afterwards: “I thought the goal should have stood, but that’s not my decision.”
