Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has defended striker Rasmus Hojlund as he navigates his first season at Old Trafford.
The 21-year-old Dane joined from Atalanta for £64 million in August. He has scored 14 goals in 40 appearances. His form has waned as he has hit just one goal in his last 10 outings, against relegated Sheffield United.
“He has had three injuries this season but still, as you say, scored 14 goals this season. I think that is a very good record for a young player,” said Ten Hag on Tuesday.
“When we decided to go for him, we talked about buying a player for this season but also for the future. He has to develop. He has to progress. He needs time.”
Despite scoring five goals in the Champions League, Hojlund couldn’t prevent United’s group-stage exit. He waited until December for his first Premier League goal but then scored seven times in six games around the new year. A subsequent muscle injury disrupted his form.
“Sometimes you have downs, but I am sure he will fight his way and he is very eager for every match,” Ten Hag added. “I am quite confident he is close to returning to form.”
United’s season has been tough, with injuries and poor form jeopardising their European qualification hopes. The Red Devils, currently eighth, need a win against sixth-placed Newcastle at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
“It’s clear it’s a very important game. Look at the ranking,” said Ten Hag. “We have to put everything in to get the win and fight hard for it.”
Lisandro Martinez may return on Wednesday, while captain Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford are also in contention.
